Family Information Session – Chiltern Way Academy

As a school working with children with complex needs we know that families regularly face a variety of challenges. We wanted to do more to build positive relationships with our families and with the agencies we all work with on a daily basis. We all need support from different services at different times in our lives, but knowing what they do; how to approach them and how they can help is another thing. With a child with additional needs this complexity is increased.

In May 2017 Chiltern Way Academy ran its first Family Information Session.

Parents, Carers and Governors were all invited to attend the day. Transport was offered from two hubs: Aylesbury and High Wycombe because we understand that for many people getting to places can be a barrier in itself. We provided lunch and refreshments throughout the day and tried to make the day fit around childcare duties for our families, therefore running from 10am until 14.15pm.

We were delighted to be joined by a number of external agencies including: CAMHS, Catch, Family Information Service, ESAS (Education Advisory service), Barnardo's R U Safe, Addaction and the school nursing service as well as having a session on behaviour management and mindfulness delivered by experienced school staff.

It was wonderful to welcome more parents than ever into a parents' session and to see parents and carers exchanging stories, tips and offering each other supporting.

Following very positive feedback from the first day, we ran the second family information session in July 2017 during which we were thrilled to welcome:YOS (Youth Offending Service), Prevent, Connexions, SEND IAS, ESAS and FIS. School staff also delivered sessions on Protective behaviours and behaviour management.

We were again delighted with the turnout and the feedback we received, which we are using to inform and plan the next day.

Due to the success of these days we are running the Family Information Sessions this year on: Thursday 9th November 2017, Thursday 1st March 2018 and Thursday 5th July 2018. We would love to welcome even more parents and carers to attend these days and to hear from you about which agencies you’d like to see attend and anything else you might find helpful.
